For this project I took Steven Universe and put it in the style of 1920s rag cartoon characters. The picture of this project is above. It took me about a week to do this project and the materials I used were water colors,copic/prisma markers, and sharpies. In this essay I will tell you how in making this I used the Principles of Design and Elements of Art.
To show that I mixed Rebecca sugars art and the genre of the 1920s cartoon I took pictures of all the characters in Steven Universe and I changed the picture to monotone so that I could color the picture in black and white. I also gave them the eyes with slashes in them and either a button or long nose. I also exaggerated their bodies to make some of them shorter or some bigger. While doing this I also had to decide if I wanted to change their bodies all black except for their faces and give them gloves. Speaking of the only reason cartoons like that wear gloves is because so you could see their hand movements with the white gloves contrasting from their black bodies. When I made their bodies I tried giving them more loose arms and legs and tried to make them either really short or really long. Even though their colors were in black and white it was still hard to find the exact grey or black but I did it anyways and also since you couldn't see though the black and where the line ends I used a jelly roll pen to outline when the lines start and separate the black parts.
When using the Principles of Art and Design I tried to look at all seven elements Balance, Emphasis, Proportion, Rhythm, Pattern, Unity, and Variety when doing my piece. I showed balance when I put them in certain places and showed how some over lap each other and how the shorter charcters are put in front of the taller ones. I emphasized how Steven, the boy in the front is the most important character as the entire show is based around him and his adventures so I put him in the center of the picture. I used proportion when I put the rest of the characters in the back and either stretched or shrinked their bodies to best suit the style I was going for. I also changed the rhythm of the show by making the picture more cheerful like how the cartoons off that era are instead of Steven Universe is right now which is very sad. The pattern of the picture is how in the main sequence of the beginning of the first theme song for Steven Universe all of the gems are put in the front with stars behind them and the name of the show in the back so I tried to include that original thing while adding more gems and more of the 1920s genre. For the unity of the picture I tried to make the picture flow instead of it being so stiff and boring. And finally for the variety of the picture I added all of the crystal gems to show the diversity of the show and how all the characters are different even though you cant see the colors.
So all and all this art piece was very fun to make. I put a lot of effort into It and this essay to show how I used the Principle of Art and Design. By making this piece I also learned for to use more greys and blacks and how different those colors are. I also in making this used new techniques for inking this piece and use more line variation and different widths for the line art. hopefully you enjoy seeing my art and especially this piece which is the last one for visual comp 1 that I am adding. But I will keep this website going and use it for more opportunities in the future,
